Here we go - in a superlative show

With their latest production, The Young Theatre at Beaconsfield demonstrated the very best of youth drama with the total involvement of some 34 young people on stage - plus a great many more behind the scenes - in what can only be described as a new and exciting theatrical event.

It is said that an author should never direct his own play, Ian Wallace proved this to be a fallacy with the best directed youth production I have ever seen - every movement of the huge cast appeared completely natural and spontaneous.

The superb set made us believe that we were in a run-down youth club and its rapid transformation into a smoky nightclub was breath-taking and brought instant applause from the audience.

Not only did we have an original script, but also original music by Alan Kingshott ... his music was exactly right and the cast did him justice with their interpretation of the songs.

I wish I had space to mention all 34 members of the cast because they were all so good. Obviously the principals stood out, with Jackie Phipps and David Worley giving amusing tongue-in-cheek performances as the leather-clad Rita and Tony. Sarah Collins and Rachel Day developed the characters of Mandy and Cheryl beautifully, while Andrew Chatfield and Mark Oldknow as the men in their lives gave excellent and contrasting support.

Rita is a fine mover

All the elements of a good musical were to be found in the Beaconsfield Young Theatre's latest production, Here We Go, premiered at the Curzon Centre… the script was fast, at times funny, and provided no problems for the mainly teenage cast.

As with most musicals, it is the music that makes or breaks a show. The music in Here We Go was good … I particularly liked the rock number "Middle-Aged Trendy" ... "On Richmond Station" was a punk number well performed, while "Keep Fit" which opened the second half was snappy. ... Jackie Phipps who played Rita, was also responsible for the choreography [and] proved to be the group's best exponent - she was a superb mover …

… an enjoyable and lively production …
