Toad of Toad Hall could not have been a better choice ... the characters were whole-hearted and assured ... the audience spent most of the evening smiling, and often rocking in their seats.
Always in the grip of a new craze, Toad (played by Rod Baker) strode across the stage puffing a cigar; (but) in the dock his leaps and bounds disappeared and (he) portrayed his despondence as well as his proudness ... and one felt almost sympathetic towards him.
Fortunately, the actors did not garb themselves in animal dress; instead face make-up, superbly applied, distinguished them from their contemporaries. Scenery and lighting was elaborate and well arranged.
The play was a great sucess ... and almost every child in the audience left with a smiling face.
